ALGIERS, July 22 (Reuters) – Algerian energy conglomerate Sonatrach and power company affiliate Sonelgas plan to build two power plants with total capacity of 2,400 MW at a cost of $2.8 billion, government-owned El Moudjahid reported on Sunday.

The combined cycle plants, in the Ain Temouchent region 400 km (250 miles) west of Algiers and in the El Tarf region 600 km (375 miles) east of Algiers, will start production by 2011.

Hundreds of new jobs will be created, Mohamed Meziane, chief executive of state-owned Sonatrach, was quoted as saying, adding that 51 percent of the ventures would be owned by Sonelgas and 49 percent by Sonatrach.

The north African country’s power generation capacity currently stands at about 7,000 MW.

Sonatrach, Africa’s biggest company by revenue, also plans to enter the commercial telecoms sector using its existing in-house fibre optic network, the newspaper reported.

The company plans to create a new firm called Algerian Energy Telecom Company (AETC) with a capital of $2.8 million to establish interconnection projects with foreign partners including Spain, Italy and Nigeria.

AETC will use 24,000 km of optic fibre currently installed inside Sonatrach and so far used only for Sonatrach’s existing operations.

« Our goal is to contribute to development outside the hydrocarbon sector, » Energy minister Chakib Khelil was quoted as saying.
